What are the different categories of firearm licenses?
Section 13 License (Self-Defence): This license is the most common for individuals who need a firearm for self-defence. To apply, you must provide a valid reason for requiring the firearm. No person may hold more than one license under this section, and it is valid for a period of 5 years. It is limited to handguns or pump-action shotguns.
Section 15 License (Occasional Sport Shooting & Hunting): This license is intended for occasional sport shooters and/or hunters. It allows ownership of firearms for recreational use. You may hold up to four licenses under this section (or three if you already hold a Section 13 license). If you have a Section 13 handgun, only one additional handgun may be licensed under Section 15. This license is valid for 10 years and is limited to handguns, pump-action shotguns, and manually-operated rifles.
Section 16 License (Dedicated Sports Shooting & Hunting): This license is for dedicated sports shooters and/or hunters who participate in organized events. To qualify, you must be a member of an accredited sports-shooting organization or hunting association and provide proof of membership. The license is valid for 10 years and applies to handguns, semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns, as well as manually-operated and self-loading rifles.
There are also other license categories such as Section 17 (Private Collection), Section 19 (Public Collection), and Section 20 (Business Purposes), which serve specialized needs.

Practical: Involves handling and shooting a firearm under supervised conditions to demonstrate safe and effective use.

Yes, you must be at least 21 years old to apply for a firearm competency certificate. However, there are exceptions for those involved in sports shooting or professional hunting under the supervision of a licensed adult.
How long is the firearm competency certificate valid?
A firearm competency certificate is typically valid for 5 years. You must renew it before it expires to keep your license valid.
Can I apply for more than one firearm license at a time?

What happens after I complete the firearm training?
Once you successfully complete the training, the accredited training provider will issue a certificate of completion. You will then need to submit your competency application to SAPS for processing, which includes background checks and a final assessment by the Firearm Registrar.
What if I fail the competency test?
If you fail either the theory or practical component, your instructor will provide feedback, and you may retake the test after additional training.
